Dave Silver gave a presentation on the history of and newer developments in gas pressurized pipe-type cable systems. While 138 kV systems have been in service for many years, 230 kV systems have not yet been placed in commercial service. Mr. Silver concentrated his presentation on the recent development efforts of 230 kV systems.
Paul Pugh discussed a dry paper spacer gas insulated cable system that he proposes to use at transmission voltage. Mr. Pugh stated that the system can be field fabricated, however he did not show results to support this claim. Several comments from the group suggested that until the manufacturing technique and electrical test results showing that the cable can withstand the industry accepted standard test requirements, this system cannot be considered for utility installation.
The two Working Groups met jointly. Darrell Sabatka, Public Service of Colorado, gave a presentation on the installation of a 230 kV XLPE cable installation. The system was installed in a duct bank within their substation. The details of the installation are included in appendix of the printed minutes.
