 E05- Minutes

Spring 1998

CO-CHAIRMEN: HARRY ORTON AND WILLEM BOONE

The Transnational Activities Subcommittee conducts two sessions during the ICC meetings. The first is the Transnational Luncheon which was held on Tuesday April 7, 1998 at 12.30 pm and the second activity is the Subcommittee 13 meeting which was held on April 8, 1998 at 8.00 am.

The Transnational Luncheon was attended by a 110 people. An anticipated attendance of 88, based upon erroneous registration statistics, was well and truly exceeded, so two additional tables had to be set by the hotel to accommodate the addition 22 people. After we completed our meal the new Chairman Harry Orton, of OCEI welcomed the attendees.

The incoming Chairman Harry Orton, of OCEI, expressed his appreciation to Ralph Samm, of EPRI, for the great job that he did in the past and hoped that the tradition established by Ralph would continue. During Ralph’s Chairmanship two IEEE panel sessions were organized on Transnational Activities. These were titled "Worldwide Practices of Underground Transmission Practices" and "Worldwide Practices of Underground Distribution Cable Practices". One paper summarizing the first panel session has been published in the IEEE Transactions and a second is under preparation by John Pegram of Union Carbide. Harry then introduced his Co-Chairman, Willem Boone, from KEMA in the Netherlands. Both co-chairmen are from outside the US, so a truly international chairmanship has been established.

Harry Orton passed along information on the International Meetings Association located in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This association keeps statistics on international meetings that could be of benefit to the Transnational Activities of the ICC. The coordinates for this organization are included in the Appendices.

Mr. Bill Torok, Fujikura America gave a brief summary of "The Langkawi Island, Malayisan 132 kV Submarine Cable" installation. A more detailed presentation was given at the Subcommittee 13 meeting the following day. A summary of the presentation is given in the Appendices.

Jukka Tiainen of NK Cables (USA) gave a presentation on "Design and Development Type Tests for 400 kV XLPE Cable at KEMA". Willem Boone of KEMA provided us with an update of international conferences with a "Calendar of International Events" and Bo Svarrer Hansen of NKT gave a presentation on "The NorNed Program". Lauri Hiivala of Alcatel Canada Wire announced that there would be a video presentation at the Subcommittee 13 meeting on the +/- 180 kV dc submarine cable crossing to Cheju Island in South Korea and Eugene Favrie announced that the next Jicable conference will be held in Versailles, just outside Paris, next year. The details of all of these presentations and the announcements are included in the Appendices.

The Transnational Activities Subcommittee 13 meeting was held on Wednesday April 8, 1998 at 8.00 am with 30 members and guests present. After the welcome by the Co-chairmen Harry Orton and Willem Boone Mr. Bill Torok gave an in-depth presentation on "The Langkwai Island, Malaysia 132 kV Submarine Cable". Mr. Lauri Hiivala gave a brief introduction to the 30 minute Alcatel video on "The Cheju Island +/- 180 kV DC Submarine Cable Crossing".

Harry Orton requested that those interested in participating in a panel session on "Worldwide Cable Accessory Practices" at the next IEEE T&D in New Orleans should contact either co-chairmen of the Transnational Activities Subcommittee.

The meeting concluded with announcements on Jicable 99 by Mr. Alain Pinet, EDF, the "Calendar of International Events" by Willem Boone.
