2007 IEEE/PES Prize Paper Award

Based on the evaluations carried out by the IEEE/PES Publication Awards Committee, the best paper that was identified is entitled Comparative Laboratory Evaluation of Pre-molded Joints for Medium Voltage Cables. The authors are Messrs. Vitaliy Yaroslavskiy (Cable Technology Laboratories), Carlos Katz (Cable Technology Laboratories), Michael L. Walker (ex CenterPoint Energy) and Robert J. Keefe (ex Electric Power Research Institute).

Matt Mashikian

Career Highlights

• Dr. Mashikian obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, and a Doctor of Engineering degree from the University of Detroit.
• Worked five years for ASEA (now ABB) first as a sales engineer and, later, as an applications engineer for lightning arresters.  He worked 16 years for Detroit Edison Company where he assumed the position of Supervising Engineer in the Engineering Research Department, and four years as an independent consultant. 
• From 1983 until his retirement in 1997, he was Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the Electrical Insulation Research Center at the University of Connecticut
• From 1983 to 1996 Matt was the Director of the Electrical Insulation Research Center and Professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering.
• Member of the IEEE Power Engineering Society and the Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (past chairman of the Education Committee)
• Past Chairman of the IEEE/PES Insulated Conductors Committee (1996 – 1997)
• Matt holds a dozen patents covering cable terminations, joints, bushings, insulation devices, lightning protection devices, a partial discharge locator, etc. He has published extensively on the premature aging of cables, cable partial discharge location, and electric vehicles, and has coauthored several EPRI technical reports.
• Member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering, a past industry advisor to EPRI, and a past member of CIGRE WG 15-6. 
• Matt is Fellow of the IEEE (1993) For contributions to the understanding, diagnosis, and mitigation of premature failure of extruded dielectric cables.
• Chair, Working Group C19 IEEE 400.3 Guide for Partial Discharge Testing of Shielded Power Cable Systems in a Field Environment
• Dr. Mashikian is the founder of IMCORP.  He is presently its Chief Technical Officer (CTO), its President and its Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
