Harry Orton

2005 ICC Distinguished Service Award

Harry Orton

A native of “Down Under”, Harry thought about being a beach bum while growing up in Newcastle, Australia, but instead earned his BE degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of New South Wales. A scholarship to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver brought him and his new wife, Carmen, to North America where they remain today.

Armed with his Masters Degree in Applied Science, Harry joined BC Hydro as an electrical research engineer. Starting with five people, the research lab grew to 120 people as Harry moved from research engineer to section head and finally to manager.

Today the lab has a staff of about 80 and Harry enjoys his career life with his own engineering consulting business that he started after leaving BC Hydro 11 years ago. Specializing in underground power cable, Harry travels the world working with clients as well as giving seminars. Harry’s desire to learn and his enthusiasm for the electrical insulation business is underscored by his current endeavor of working towards his Ph.D. back at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

In the late 1980s at the request of fellow IEEE member John Tanaka, Chairman of the Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC) Board of Governors, he became Chairman of the EIC Short Course Program and continues to hold that position organizing an outstanding educational program every two years.

Harry also served on the EIC Board of Governors representing IEEE of which he has been a member for 40 years starting as a student in Australia in the 1960s. [The Electrical Insulation Conference is held every two years in conjunction with the Electrical Manufacturing Expo (EME). The EIC-EME 2007 is sponsored by the IEEE, NEMA and EMCWA.]   In 2007 Harry received the EIC Hall of Fame Award.

In his spare time Harry jogs, canoes, swims and skis in the winter at Whistler Mountain just outside Vancouver, the venue for the 2010 Winter Olympics. He has just completed 31 years on the Whistler Mountain Ski Patrol.
